The Carroll Dragon Band is pleased to announce the two newest members of our directorial staff, Mr. Gary Barnard and Mr. Jon Maynard.

GARY BARNARD received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Arlington, graduating Magna Cum Laude in May of 2006. In May of 2012 he completed his Master of Educational Administration and Principal Certification from the University of North Texas.

Most recently, Mr. Barnard served as Director of Bands at Braswell High School, overseeing all aspects of the wind, percussion, and colorguard programs. Prior to his appointment at Braswell, Mr. Barnard spent 10 years as the Associate Director of Bands at Birdville High School. At Birdville his ensembles received consistent UIL “Superior” ratings and a number of “Best in Class” awards at local festivals.

The Birdville Mighty Hawk Marching Band experienced a number of competitive successes including multiple Finalist appearances at Bands of America Regionals and twice advancing to the UIL State Marching Contest. Nationally, the Birdville Band performed at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena and the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. Mr. Barnard was part of creating Birdville’s dynamic jazz, musical orchestra, pep band, and fishing club programs. He also served as the TMEA Jazz Chairman for Region 5.

As a tuba and guitar player, Mr. Barnard's performance experiences include the nationally recognized Union High School Band, the Missouri State University Band, the University of Texas at Arlington Band, the Colts Drum and Bugle Corp (Dubuque, IA) and the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (Rockford, IL).

Mr. Barnard enjoys anything related to music, fitness, the Chicago Bears and Chicago Blackhawks, fishing, hunting duck and pheasant, traveling, reading, grilling, Star Wars, and visiting family in the Midwest and Great Plains. He is happily engaged to Carroll Color Guard Director Daphne Adkison.

JON MAYNARD received his Bachelors Degree of Music Education from the University of North Texas. During his time at UNT, he studied under notable professors such as Paul Rennick, Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, and Ed Soph. In 2013 and 2015, Jon took part in leading the UNT quad ensemble to become PASIC champions.

Mr. Maynard has been an active member of several independent performing arts organizations since he was in high school. His performing career started in 2011, marching Forte Drum and Bugle Corps with Tyler Orbison as caption head. He then went on to march Santa Clara Vanguard for four years (2013 – 2016), serving as the quad section leader for his last two years. The SCV percussion section won the Fred Sanford Award for high percussion twice (2014, 2016), with Paul Rennick as the caption head. During the winter months, Jon was the quad section leader for Vigilantes Indoor Percussion (2013 – 2017). Under the direction of Tyler Orbison, VIP won the gold medal in 2016.

Since the start of his collegiate career, Jon has been teaching throughout the DFW area. Beginning in 2013, he was fortunate to work with Tyler Orbison and Stuart Spoon at Boswell High School, leading both the indoor and outdoor groups to success. Jon was also a private lesson teacher for several schools, including Boswell High School, Creekview Middle School, Burleson High School, and Lake Worth High School. Most recently, Jon was on the percussion staff at Colleyville Heritage High School.
